Joshua’s Charge – Joshua 23:1-16

Questions for Discussion & Application
  1. What questions do you have about today’s passage and message?
  2. Why might the stories of God’s past faithfulness inspire courageous faith in the hearts of His people to trust and obey Him?
  3. Do you have any example of God’s past faithfulness from your own life that inspires courageous faith in your heart?
  4. Israel was commanded to cling to the Lord and not to the remnant of the pagan nations around them. How are we called as Christians to be separate from the world around us? 
  5. How can we guard our hearts and lives from the influence of the world around us?
  6. Joshua warned Israel not to abandon their covenant with the Lord. Do we have any similar warnings given to us as Christians?  (See Hebrews 10:26-31.)

    2. Have your words or intentions ever been misunderstood? Have you ever misunderstood the words and actions of another?  Why does this sometimes happen?
    3. What wisdom do we see in this passage for how we should respond to situations where a misunderstanding might be possible?
    4. In a potential misunderstanding among fellow Christians, why should we always assume the best of one another? (See I Corinthians 13:7.)
    5. Why should we gather up the facts instead of passing judgment about another believer based upon a suspicion or rumors? How will this pattern help to preserve the unity of Jesus’ Church? 
    6. In today’s passage, the unity of the nation of Israel was preserved by good communication that resolved a misunderstanding. How does this challenge you to act in ways that will also protect the unity of Jesus’ church?  (See Matthew 18:15-17.)

    1. What questions do you have about today’s passage and message?
    2. How do we see the wholehearted obedience of Caleb in Joshua 15:13-14?
    3. Caleb’s obedience flowed from his faith in God and confidence in God’s promises. Why is such faith in God always the path to true obedience?  What example can you give of this being true from your own life?
    4. We see the incomplete obedience of the tribes of Judah, Ephraim, and Manasseh in Joshua 15:63, 16:10, & 17:12. Why is this significant?  What can we learn from this about our calling to put sin to death instead of trying to manage it?
    5. The reluctance of the tribes of Benjamin, Simeon, Zebulun, Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Dan to take possession of the land was confronted by Joshua in Joshua 18:3. Delaying our obedience is a form of disobedience that we too must confront in our own lives.  Is there an area where you are delaying to obey what God’s Word instructs you to do? 
    6. In Joshua 19:49-50 we see the reward of Joshua’s wholehearted faith and obedience. How have you experienced God’s blessings as the fruit of your obedience that flows from faith?

    2. Even if we have lived a long and fruitful life, we will inevitably leave behind much work left undone for God’s Kingdom that we must pass along to others. How might this reality influence the mindset and perspective of older Christians who are coming close to the finish line of their lives?
    3. Joshua gave instructions for the distribution of the land as an act of preparation for Israel to finish receiving it. How can one generation of Christians prepare the next generation to continue receiving what God has promised?
    4. In Caleb, we see strength, courage, and zeal to receive his inheritance and to fight the Anakim even though he was advanced in years. How does Caleb’s example of living out his faith in his eighties challenge us to greater faithfulness?
    5. How might older Christians invest their final years well for God’s Kingdom?

    2. God went from tearing down the walls of Jericho to allowing His people to be easily defeated at Ai. What commitment does this demonstrate in the heart of God?

    4. What discouraging defeats might a church experience if there is unrepentant sin within the community?
    5. How does God instruct His church to deal with unrepentant sin today (see Matthew 18:15-20)?

    1. What questions do you have about today’s passage and message?
    2. Israel succeeded in the battle against Jericho only by obeying God’s unconventional instructions. How are God’s instructions to the Church for our Gospel conquest also unconventional (Matthew 28:18-20)? 
    3. How do these unconventional instructions lead us to trust and rely upon God instead of our own strength and wisdom (2 Corinthians 4:7)?
    4. Israel was the agent of God’s righteous judgement on the very wicked city of Jericho. What does this teach us about God’s view of sin?  How does this point forward to God’s future judgement (2 Thessalonians 1:5-10)?
    5. Rahab and her family were the only people of Jericho who were rescued from God’s judgement against the city. Why was Rahab and her family rescued (see Hebrews 11:31)?  How are we rescued from the wrath and judgement to come upon the world (I Thessalonians 1:9-10 & John 3:36)? 
    6. Have you repented of your rebellion against God and placed your trust in Jesus alone to save you?
